MODULE 1 SESSION - KNOWN/UNKNOWNS

It was so nice to see people in the session on Monday and be able to put more real faces to the names of the blogs we have all been reading!

At the beginning of the session panic set in when Helen asked up to talk to the group and state our practice, however her explanation of our discipline being the thing that we are trained in, mine being dance and our practice being how that is looking today, which I think I am still struggling to define along with quite a few other people on the call it seems, but I also felt that actually having to articulate and tell the group where I saw my practice as I think sometimes hearing our own words can help to clarify and solidify the thoughts and feeling which we have inside.

At the moment I would articulate my practice as

- Continuing to find ways to develop as a dancer and a performer in the current climate

- Exploring the transition from performer to teacher

-`Using dance as a form of wellbeing practice and changing the way I have seen my discipline in the pas?'

I am looking forward to using the handbook and exploring my practice further to be able to have a more solid answer to 'What is my practice?'

This also allowed my to accept my practice for what is it as the current moment and allow myself to be content with that but to also use it to create a plan for where I would like my practice to go and what I would like my end goal to be.

One thing which I really took from the call is how easily as a collective we put ourselves and our talent down by denormalising our disciplines and practice. I think it was so important to hear Helen speak about how our practice is our normal and not to discredit what we do, which I think in the current climate is an extremely important thing to remember.

I found the session extremely helpful and it opened up new avenues which I hadn't reached yet, one thing this course is teaching me is that I'm not going to know a lot of things and not to panic but to use that to guide my path of learning, something which I have recently been exploring is the Knowns and Unknowns frame work which was largely bought to the surface by the US Secretary of State, Donald Rumsfeld, but created in the 13th century by Islamic Philosopher Ibn Yami. Taking this framework not in the literal context it was meant but allow me see that there are lots of things that I wont yet know but that bringing them to the surface and acknowledging that I am unaware of them I will be able to take my learning to the next step by looking in to the theories and ideas that have been brought up.

Pieces of Intelligence

As we know,

There are known knowns.

There are things we know we know.

We also know

There are known unknowns.

That is to say

We know there are some things

We do not know.

But there are also unknown unknowns,

The ones we don’t know

We do not know.

Finally, there are unknown knowns

The knowns

We do not want to know.

by Hart Seely (here in an edited version by Daase and Kessler):

My next steps:

- Looking deeper into my Areas of learning and using reflection to enable this

- Delving deeper in to the Lenses to see what will arise

- Don't panic if things don't look like anything but lots of notes at the moment

-Keep exploring and connecting

  1. I think we all felt a bit vulnerable when asked to talk about our practice - do any of us have a clear idea of it yet? We're all in the same boat. I agree it was useful to hear everyone's ideas out loud. The discussion over 'normal' was very interesting and has sparked a lot of thoughts. It's disconcerting to not have a clear idea of where all these thoughts are going but it was great to meet and stimulate ideas. I love the poem you've quoted, so true.

    1. Hi Sally, yes I think we definitely all felt the same way and yes it was great to be able to connect and through collective intelligence spark and ignite ideas for other which i know it certainly did for me. I am trying to remind my self that its okay to have 'known unknowns' because thats how i will learn.

  2. Hi Hannah,

I enjoyed reading your blog because I could connect with it so much! I was panicking when Helen said that our discipline would be dance and not our practice. Like Sally said it left me feeling vulnerable and afraid that my work prior to the meeting was all wrong!! I'm glad that I wasn't the only one.
Although I am still unsure on what my practice is. I would also say an area of it is looking further into the transition from being a performer into a teacher. Would love to connect with you on this and share ideas.
I have found that learning from others is huge to my practice reading your blog has helped solidify some of my own thoughts!
    Thank you for posting,

    2. Hi Abi,
Thank you for your response, I think its quite interesting really how we all felt the same in regards to answering Helens question on the call in front of each other and all came out with some sort of articulated answer! Yet on the inside were all screaming! What does this say about us and how we learn? Why are we all able to do this? in Kolbs learning cycle are we actively experimenting with our thoughts and ideas? however I think in the session I touched on all stages of the cycle,
Active experiment- prior to the session planning/exploring what i thought my practice was
Concrete Experience- I then had to articulate and actually be involved in saying my answer
Reflective Observation- I then began listening to others ideas and thoughts and feeling and began reflecting on my own answer
Abstract Conceptualisation- I tried to conclude my thoughts and bring together a more formed version of my answer

(I'm still not sure if this is right I'm just trying to start putting more things in to context to see if i can solidify my understanding a little more)
and yes would love to connect with you in regards to the transition and see how our experiences have led us to want to explore that route! and likewise with your blogs, I plan to try and blog a little more just to let my own thoughts have somewhere to sit !
I look forward to catching up with you and your thoughts soon!
